Esquire and Mr. Pepper stood on either side of the warehouse’s exit, ushering through a stream of depressed animals.

Esquire had never really been the connect-with-your-feelings type, but seeing the drawn faces in the procession got her to dig deep. “Go eat some fish, kittiwake, you’ll feel better in a few days . . . go now, ermine, I’m sure your family will take care of you until you’re back to your old self . . . I know what you’re feeling, walrus, but animals do recover after being caged, it just takes time, be good to yourself in the meantime.”

It was as if Esquire weren’t even there, as if she weren’t giving good advice on matters of the heart. The animals didn’t respond, just hurried into the frigid night, never looking back.
